This Week’s Dan’s Papers Cover Artist: Charles Wildbank

DAN’S PAPERS JUNE 28, 2013 COVER, ART BY CHARLES WILDBANK
JUNE 29, 2013 BY MARION WOLBERG WEISS

It’s hard to completely characterize this week’s cover artist, Charles Wildbank. A look at his still lifes, fruit (like the cover image of strawberries) and portraits shows a predisposition for Photorealism. His flowers, including poppies and sunflowers, are luscious and so real, we can smell them as if they were in the same room with us. His portraits, often of children, are just as present; we can almost imagine what they are thinking, like the red-headed young boy and the child on the beach. Close-up and a realistic style help us to experience Wildbank’s paintings, but then there’s a surprise, like the double image of a clown, more surreal than anything else. We sense this character’s existence, too. We still see him in our mind’s eye, long after his image is no longer before us.

The North Fork of Long Island has a reputation for good food and fine wine. Set apart from the crowds of the Hamptons, amid fragrant gardens and farmland, the Jedediah Hawkins Inn aptly reflects the area’s charms. It has one suite and five guest rooms that range from nautical to homely. But the real draw here is in the free wine tastings at 14 nearby vineyards and the celebrated farm-to-fork restaurant by executive chef Lia Fallon.

Jedediah Hawkins Inn, 400 South Jamesport Avenue, Jamesport (001 631 722 2900; jedediahhawkinsinn.com). Doubles start at $279 (£186), B&B.

Yelp to Table @ Jedediah Hawkins Inn

Long Island Elite were invited to partake in an immersive experience at the landmark property, Jedediah Hawkins Inn, that combined hands-on learning and a private tour of the bucolic grounds with an opportunity to sample the farm-to-table cuisine of new executive chef, Lia Fallon.

Guests entered the sunny patio area of the Inn and were greeted with a Lemonbalm Daly (lemonbalm infused iced tea, Vertical vodka, fresh lemonbalm leaves and freshly dropped lemonade) before grabbing a light snack from a spectacular cheese spread that included rosemary asiago, montemore, danish bleu and two different varieties of goat cheese.

Next, Pam Hunt, Great Grandaughter of Jedidiah Hawkins, detailed the fascinating history of the Inn on a private tour of the property. While walking the property, sous chef Brian showed Elite the herb garden where many of the ingredients used in the Inn’s dishes were made. Post-tour, the crew headed to the downstairs speakeasy for a wine tasting with Pellegrini Vineyards chief winemaker Tom Drozd. Elites sampled an ’07 Cabernet Franc, which is known as one of the finest years for Long Island wines, and paired it with duck spring rolls, freshly made by Chef Fallon and her staff.

Shira F recapped: “Lastly, we were brought into the kitchen with the sous chefs and executive chef, Lia. The kitchen was large, immaculate, and full of every appliance you could imagine! It was like my own personal heaven. Lia showed us how she made tuna nicoise salad. She used these cool broccoli greens that were very unique! The salad was one of the best I’ve ever had. The tuna was crazy good. It was great to see how passionate she was about her cooking. She was so lovely and it was really kind of her to open up her kitchen to us.” After the demonstration, “we ended the night with some amazing desserts. The trifle with lemon curd, strawberries, rhubarb, and fresh whipped cream was to die for. The chocolate pistachio heaven on a plate was also amazing. And the French macarons? Are you kidding me?! Out of this world. The pistachio one was the best I’ve ever had.”

A sincere thank you to Tom from Pellegrini Vineyards, Chef Lia, Brian, Colin, Rich, Doug, Pam Hunt and the rest of the hardworking staff at the Inn! You can peep all the 5-star reviews here, check the pics from Daanyaal K and

Wine Travel Destination 2013: North & South Forks of Long Island, New York

Just a two-hour drive from Manhattan, the East End is a unique amalgam of metropolitan influences against a core of hearty, agricultural tradition. Fringed by sandy beaches and bustling fishing villages, rolling farmland and forest sanctuaries, Long Island wine country is unlike any region in America. The North and South Forks of the island, collectively known as the East End, extend into the Atlantic Ocean like a two-tined fork, with picturesque Shelter Island wedged between the spears. Just a two-hour drive from Manhattan, it’s a unique amalgam of metropolitan influences against a core of hearty, agricultural tradition. Family-owned farms, artisanal food producers and small-production winemakers mingle amongst tony Hamptonites, sharing the wealth of the region’s land, sea and vines.
